Flat U.S. card delinquencies warn of elusive recovery

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Fewer Americans fell behind on credit card payments in September, but the pace of improvement slowed almost to a standstill, accelerating fears that banks will not recover from their consumer loan losses for years.

Credit card bank stocks declined on Friday, with shares of Capital One Financial Corp (COF.N) posting the worst decline among banks. Shares of other major U.S. banks also fell on Friday as investor expressed concern over a growing mortgage foreclosure crisis.

Credit card delinquencies, which indicate that consumers are late paying their bills, are an early sign of future losses, or charge-offs.

Banks file monthly credit card reports with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Delinquencies in September were flat or slightly lower at major U.S. card lenders, the filings showed, indicating losses were unlikely to surge again soon. But the rate of decline was slower than in previous months this year.

"There's been a bit of a flat-lining in the last couple of months," said Michael Taiano, an analyst with Sandler O'Neill.

Overall credit card loss rates remained high at most lenders.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon told investors and analysts on Wednesday that he did not expect the bank's credit card portfolio to "bottom out" until the third quarter of 2011.

The company and its main competitors are also struggling to grow their credit card businesses because consumers are reluctant to take on more debt.

IMPROVEMENT SLOWS

Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) and Citigroup Inc (C.N) reported the largest declines in overall credit card losses on Friday, but both continued to report some of the highest charge-offs among major U.S. credit card lenders.

Delinquency rates at both banks remained essentially flat, signaling their losses may not decline much in coming months.

Bank of America's charge-offs fell to 9.99 percent in September from 11.73 percent in August. But its delinquencies edged up to 5.71 percent from 5.68 percent, according to its filing.

Citigroup's charge-offs fell to 8.99 percent in September from 11.18 percent in August, but its delinquencies declined to 4.93 percent from 4.95 percent.

JPMorgan Chase's credit card delinquencies fell to 3.82 percent in September from 3.89 percent in August. Its charge-offs declined to 7.78 percent from 8.18 percent.

American Express said its delinquencies inched up to 2.5 percent in September from 2.4 percent in August. But the credit card lender and processing network continued to report the lowest monthly delinquencies and losses of the major U.S. lenders, and its charge-offs dropped to 4.7 percent from 5.5 percent in August.

Discover Financial Services (DFS.N) said delinquencies ticked down to 4.41 percent in September from 4.47 percent in August. Charge-offs also fell to 7.15 percent, their lowest level this year.

Discover, like American Express Co (AXP.N), lends directly to consumers and also competes with Visa Inc (V.N) and MasterCard Inc (MA.N) to process credit card transactions for banks.

Capital One's delinquencies were 4.53 percent in September from 4.56 percent in August, while the McLean, Virginia-based bank's credit card losses rose to 8.38 percent from 8.18 percent.

Capital One shares closed down 7.6 percent at $36.86; Bank of America shares closed down 4.9 percent at $11.98; JPMorgan shares closed down 4.05 percent at $37.15; Citigroup shares closed down 2.7 percent at $3.95; Discover shares closed down 3.17 percent at $17.10; and American Express shares closed down 0.88 percent at $39.09.

GE revenue falls short of Street view

BOSTON (Reuters) – General Electric Co (GE.N) reported a sharper-than-expected drop in revenue on slack demand for heavy equipment, casting doubts about the pace of the U.S. recovery from the worst economy since the Great Depression.

The largest U.S. conglomerate's 5.1 percent decline in sales overshadowed better-than-expected profit and sent GE shares down 3 percent in premarket trading on Friday as some investors took it as another sign that the economic recovery is faltering.

Revenue came to $35.89 billion, below the $37.54 billion analysts had expected, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. The shortfall reflected faltering demand for energy equipment, jet engines and railroad locomotives.

"I'm a little concerned about the broader manufacturing sector, that this may be a bit of a harbinger," said Peter Sorrentino, portfolio manager at Huntington Asset Advisors in Cincinnati.

Investors will get a more detailed look into the sector's future next week when manufacturing heavyweights United Technologies Corp (UTX.N), Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N) and Honeywell International Inc (HON.N) report their results.

There have been a number of signs in recent weeks that the U.S. recovery is slowing. A Business Council survey released on Thursday showed that just one in three U.S. CEOs believe their industries will improve over the next six months.

RIDING THE 'NEW NORMAL'

The revenue miss largely reflects the weak economy, investors said. GE's overall order backlog held steady at $172 billion.

"In the new normal world, you can't expect to see much in backlog growth," Jack De Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. "It would have been positive to see it growing. It didn't, and I'm thinking foreign exchange may have had something to do with that. Next quarter they'll probably get a tailwind in their backlog.

Chief Executive Jeff Immelt reported rising orders for both equipment and services -- an indicator of future sales, the first time both have increased in two years.

"A renewed GE should grow earnings and dividends in 2011 and beyond," Immelt said in a statement.

In July, GE said it would raise its quarterly dividend by 20 percent to 12 cents per share, starting a process of restoring a payout that it slashed from 31 cents per share during the downturn.

Profit from continuing operations -- which factors out GE's pruning of its finance arm -- came to $3.16 billion, or 29 cents a share, up 29 percent from $2.45 billion, or 22 cents a share, a year earlier. On that basis, GE beat Wall Street's earnings forecast by 2 cents per share.

Net income, including $1.1 billion in losses related to GE Capital portfolio restructuring, fell 18 percent.

The results marked GE's second consecutive quarter of earnings growth after a nine-quarter streak of declines.

The company said the decline in revenue in part reflected its efforts to trim back the capital business, which emerged as its Achilles' heel during the credit crisis and recession. The finance unit's revenue fell 3 percent in the quarter, while sales its GE's energy infrastructure unit fell 14 percent.

As of Thursday's close, GE shares have risen about 14 percent for the year, outpacing the 6 percent rise of the Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI), of which it is a component.

Kenny Chesney's new album headed to No. 1

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Country star Kenny Chesney is set to capture his sixth No. 1 album on the U.S. pop chart next week, with industry prognosticators suggesting he could sell 180,000 to 200,000 copies of "Hemingway's Whiskey" by week's end on Sunday.

Chesney's last studio album, 2008's "Lucky Old Sun," bowed at No. 1 with 176,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The only country star with more No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 is Garth Brooks with eight.

The No. 2 debut next week will likely come from Lil Wayne's "I Am Not A Human Being," which is currently only available to purchase digitally and will perhaps sell around 100,000 downloads. The physical version of the jailed rapper's set, with three additional tracks, comes out on October 12.

Other new releases in the mix when the Billboard 200 is released on Wednesday include Gucci Mane's "The Appeal," Jimmy Eat World's "Invented" and Eric Clapton's "Clapton."

The current Billboard 200 champ is Zac Brown Band's "You Get What You Give," which sold 153,000 copies during the week ended September 26, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
