Police block New York's Times Square in security scare

NEW YORK (AFP) – New York police on Wednesday blocked access to the area around bustling Times Square due to what they called a "suspicious vehicle."

"There is a suspicious vehicle, close to 43rd Street and 8th Avenue," a police spokesman told AFP.

Police blocked the street and were investigating, the spokesman said without providing more details.

A failed bomber, Faisal Shahzad, was sentenced October 5 to life in prison after trying to blow up his SUV in the heart of the tourist district.

The 30-year-old Pakistani-born naturalized American pleaded guilty last June to the botched bombing, which officials said could have claimed dozens of lives had the crude device not fizzled without igniting.

He admitted to parking the car packed with fireworks, gasoline and propane on one of New York's busiest streets, and vowed during his sentencing hearing that it was only a first salvo in America's "war with the Muslims."
