Artist Chris LaPorte Wins $250,000 "American Idol"-Style Grand Rapids ArtPrize

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Perhaps you thought Bravo's "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" was a bold step toward the democratization of contemporary art, with unknown contestants vying for a $100,000 cash prize, judged by art establishment heavy-hitters likeand . Well, that's like getting punched by an elitist Harvard finals club compared to the Grand Rapids ArtPrize, a much bigger $250,000 accolade awarded by everyday art-lovers voting by text message and online.

The massive ArtPrize competition this year involved 192 Grand Rapids venues, 1,713 artists, and 465,538 votes cast for a winner. The competition is strictly D.I.Y. — artists found their own venues across the city in which to stage and display their work.

The recently announced winner is , whose large-scale photorealist drawing of American cavalrymen in 1921 earned him the top payout of $250,000. "Drawing is always cool — no matter what your age or background," LaPorte writes in his artist bio, which also notes that he earns a living making commercial portraits and caricatures.

Second prize went to another photorealist work — this time in stained glass — by . The third-prize winner, , was recognized for her delicate-looking room-sized installation of red thread and needles, suggesting that the general voting public does have a taste for more conceptual, less figurative work.
